DEFIANCE – Larry Lee Sheaks, 73, of Defiance, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at 5:37 p.m., Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at St. Luke’s Medical Center, Maumee. He was born August 24, 1944 in Kalida to the late Curray and Beatrice (Decker) Sheaks. On July 19, 1980, he married Laura Spencer and she survives in Defiance.
Other survivors include two children: Daniel Sheaks of Costa Rica and Douglas (Kelly) Sheaks of Valdosta, GA; son-in-law: Pete De Santis of Myrtle Beach, SC; and 9 grandchildren: Ashley (Jonathon) Verhoff, Courtney (Brody) McCullough, Justin (Gabrielle) Sheaks, Preston Sheaks, Zackary Horne, Carly De Santis, Emma Sheaks, Chelsea De Santis and Hailey Sheaks; and 4 great-grandchildren: Savannah Verhoff, Nataleigh Verhoff, Kasyn Sheaks and Norah Verhoff.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter: Christine De Santis; two brothers: Junior Sheaks and Adam Sheaks; and two sisters: Wanda Beemer and Patsy Fought.
Larry retired in 1999 from GM Powertrain in Defiance. He was a US Army National Guard Veteran during the Vietnam Era. Larry was a member of Local 211 retirees and a life member of the Defiance Am Vets 1991 and Defiance Fish and Game Club.
Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 23, 2017 at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Continental with Pastor Jerry Meyer officiating. Burial will follow in Monroe Cemetery with military rites by the Defiance Am Vets. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Heitmeyer Funeral Home, Continental where there will be an Am Vets service at 7:00 p.m.
