On Friday the Continental High School Girls basketball team lost the first quarter to Hilltop in the 37th Ayersville Holiday Tournament consolation finals but came out to decisively win the middle quarters to take their last game in the Hanger. The Pirates won the tip and Kaitlyn Alvarado went down to put in the first basket for an early Pirate lead 2-0. A three by the Cadets was followed by a basket from Amber Logan to make it 4-3 Pirates. A 5 point Cadet run was stopped when Alex Hoeffel made a basket Cadets 8, Pirates 6. A Cadet basket was followed by a Pirate 5 point run (2 by Addyson Armey and Logan and a free throw by Alvarado). Pirates 11, Cadets 10. A Cadet 3 pointer with 3 seconds left made it Cadets 13, Pirates 11 after one.
The Cadets started the second quarter by putting in the first 2 to take 15-11 lead. It was then all Pirates as they put in the next 8 points (Brooke Bradford 2, Logan 4, Armey 2) Pirates 19-15. A pair of Cadet free thows separated a Logan basket Pirates 21, Cadets 17. The Pirates went on another 8 point run to finish off the quarter (Logan 4, Armey 2. Hoeffel 2). Pirates 29, Cadets 17 at half. Pirates outscored the Cadets 18-4 in the second with Logan getting 10 of the Pirates points.
The Pirates (Alvarado, Hoeffel, and Logan) and Cadets traded the next six baskets for a Pirate 35-23 advantage to start the third. A pair of Cadet baskets sandwiched a Logan basket making it Pirates 37, Cadets 27. That finished the Cadet scoring for the period as the Pirates put in the last 9 (Catelyn Etter 2, Armey 3, Alvarado 2, Logan )2. The Pirates outscored the Cadets 18 -10 in the third to take a 46-27 advantage into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter saw a the two teams combine for 23 trips to the foul line and the Cadets taking the quarter by 1. Pirates final 64-46.
Amber Logan led the Pirates with 25 points while Addyson Armey put in 12. Kaitlyn Alvarado and Alex Hoeffel both had 9 points. Brooke Bradford put in 4, Maddie Burke 3 and Catelyn Etter 2. Amber Logan was named to the all Tournament team.
The Pirates 1-8 will travel to Miller City on Friday for a Putnam County League game. Hilltop falls to 0-11. Leipsic (8-1) took the Holiday Tournament Championship with a 46-23 over Ayersville (5-6).
This is the last Pirates trip to the Hanger as Ayersville should be moving into their new school next year. The game was broadcast on WPMN.
